If anything, the Zadar region is synonymous for being one with nature. Not yet overly populated, the Zadar region finds itself in the centre of some of the world’s most beautiful nature reserves.

This is a no brainer, and we should not be telling you, yet it would be silly if we don’t mention the Plitvice lakes. Some 1,5 hour drive from O’live Residence, it makes for a great day trip to visit some of the most beautiful waterfalls you’ll ever see. The lakes themselves are a wonder, with crystal clean turquoise fresh water. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage in 1979, words cannot describe the beauty of Plitivce lakes, you really just need to go.

Less than a 50min drive from O’live Residence you’ll find the waterfalls of Krka. The national park of Krka is also highly recommended for a visit. Take a nice stroll through the boardwalks of the Krka waterfalls (called Skradinski Buk), enjoy a picnic or lunch, and make sure you have ample memory on your phone or camera for photos.
For those with more time on your hands, you can even take a ferry from Skradin to the entrance of the waterfalls (between April and October).
During the warmer months, it is advised to arrive early, just to avoid the crowds and to enjoy the serenity of the Krka national park and waterfalls. A trip to Krka can be combined with a trip to the wineries in the region found in our wine blog post

For those interested in a less demanding nature walk, the Vrana Lakes (Vranjsko jezero), is a great choice. Less than a 30min drive from O’live Residence. It’s a great day out for the entire family.
Vrana lake is one of the best spots for bird watching. No matter what time of the year you attend, you will be impresses with the flora and fauna. Take a stroll to Kamenjak viewpoint, and enjoy one of the best views over the lake and nearby islands. It offers one of the greatest sunsets you will see.
The lake offers cycling and hiking trails, as well as an adventure park. There is also a horse club, for those interested in horse back riding. Swimming is also possible.

If you’ve travelled to O’live Residence by car or travelled by plane from the North of Croatia, you would have crossed the Velebit mountain range. Velebit is a majestic mountain that separates the continental European climate from the Mediterranean.
Velebits impressive peaks provide a great vantage for some of the most spectacular views.
The national park closest to O’live Residence is the Paklenica National Park, with entrance at Starigrad. There are several educational trails you can take on your own or take a guide and get to know all the ins and outs of the national park.
Be sure to pack plenty of water and ensure you have good shoes.

Whilst in Pakelnica National Park, you might want to take the underground adventure of the Manita Peć. The cave opens in April each year, and is testimony to time as it is packed with natural stalagmites and stalactites, speleothems, and unique formations in the caves, these sights are totally different from what you have seen before.
The cave is found after an easy 1,5h hike and is accessible as part of a guided tour. The air temperature can vary significantly in comparison to the outside temperature so ensure you have a jumper or jacket with you.
There is also the Modrić cave, which is outside the National Park, and is accessible to the public through a pre-booked tour.
